What is a commercial WiFi survey (and why do you need one before deployment)?

A commercial WiFi survey is the planning step that decides where access points go, how channels are assigned, and what coverage and capacity you can expect. Skipping it is the single most expensive mistake in a WiFi deployment.

A commercial WiFi survey is the planning step that decides where access points (APs) go, how channels are assigned between them, and what coverage and capacity you can expect once they are turned up. It happens before cabling and mounting, not after. Skipping it is the single most expensive mistake in a commercial WiFi deployment.

What a survey actually produces

A WiFi survey produces three things:

  • A heatmap showing expected signal strength across the site, at different bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, 6 GHz).
  • An access point placement plan showing exactly where each AP mounts, at what height, with what antenna orientation.
  • A channel and power plan showing the channel assignment, transmit power, and neighbour relationships for every AP.

A good survey also flags physical and RF obstacles: metal racks, elevator shafts, concrete walls, large appliance loads, glass atriums, and high-density client areas. Those shape the plan more than the floor plan does.

Predictive vs on-site (AP-on-a-stick) surveys

There are two main flavors:

  • Predictive survey — done with a floor plan and a planning tool (like Ekahau or Hamina) before any hardware is on site. The tool simulates RF propagation through walls, ceilings, and known obstacles. It is fast, cheap, and gets you 80% of the way to a good plan.
  • On-site (AP-on-a-stick) survey — done with a temporary AP mounted at the planned location, a survey device, and walking the site to measure real signal. It is slower and more expensive, but it captures real-world RF behaviour that predictive models miss.

For most commercial sites, the right approach is both: predictive to plan and budget, on-site to validate and tune. For large or unusual sites (warehouses, manufacturing floors, multi-floor hospitality, healthcare), on-site is mandatory.

Why skipping the survey is expensive

The most common reason projects skip the survey is “we already know where the APs go.” Usually this means: even spacing across the ceiling, based on a paper plan that was not accurate, and a “we’ll fix it after” attitude. The result is predictable:

  • Coverage holes. Corners, washrooms, back-of-house, stairwells, and the area around metal racking get poor signal.
  • Co-channel interference. Two APs on the same channel, too close together, hammering each other’s capacity.
  • Capacity problems. The lobby is fine at 8 AM and unusable at 9 AM when 200 people walk in.
  • Costly rework. Moving an AP after it is mounted, fished through ceiling tile, and terminated is 5–10x the cost of placing it correctly the first time.

The survey exists to make those problems visible before the cabling, mounting, and termination are done. A $1,500–$5,000 survey typically saves $15,000–$50,000 in rework, plus the harder-to-quantify cost of a WiFi network that does not actually work.

What a survey is not

A WiFi survey is not:

  • A speed test in the lobby.
  • A vendor proposal that says “we recommend 12 APs.”
  • A free quote-time visit from a vendor that has not done the work.
  • The same as a cellular or public-safety survey (different bands, different requirements).

A WiFi survey is also not a substitute for good cabling. The AP still needs power (usually PoE from a switch) and a data run back to the closet. Many survey plans fail not because the AP placement was wrong, but because the cabling plan was not aligned with the AP plan.
